Anglers required to help save the UK’s oldest carp

20 February 2024

The Wild Carp Trust seeks volunteers to help us save and rehome the historic Llyngwyn carp. We have permission to catch the carp by rod and line, so if you have access to a fishing rod and want free fishing this year at the UK’s most famous wild carp water, then you could catch carp for us to rehome.

We have exclusive access to Llyngwyn until 30 September 2024, needing to visit as often as possible to catch and rehome more than a thousand carp.

There will be monthly ‘all hands on deck’ weekend-long events at the water, and ad-hoc fishing trips in between by as many anglers as can attend. Llyngwyn is 16 acres, so can accommodate dozens of anglers at any time, or it could be offered for exclusive access for smaller parties. A committee member needs to be present to set out the holding nets and collect and transport the carp at the end of the trip, but other than this you can go there with our permission and enjoy quality sport – so long as all carp are placed into the holding nets so that they can be safely rehomed.

Priority will be given to anglers who can fish at Llyngwyn before August. We’re up against the clock, needing to move the carp while the water is cooler (and dissolved oxygen higher); also before the toxic blue-green algae returns in the hot weather, and – worst case – before we see carp fatalities due to oxygen crashes or food shortage.
