Wild carp fry collection going well

19 September 2024

Mid-September has brought warmer weather and sunny days to mid-Wales. Llyngwyn experienced significant growth of blanket weed (single stem algae) and a bloom of toxic blue-green algae. Fearing an oxygen crash that would affect small fish first, the Wild Carp Trust and Rhayader & Elan Valley AA have begun saving the fry from this and last year’s spawnings.

Crayfish traps have been baited with bread and placed around the lake, with fry caught being transferred to a specially constructed holding cage. An average of 100 carp fry per day are being caught, all of which are being moved to the Wild Carp Trust’s rearing facility where they will be free from pollution and predation until they are large enough to go into our stock ponds.

Rhayader AA member Phil Price removes carp fry from their temporary holding net.
